| Philanthropy Spotlight: Harrison Ford
The former Ally McBeal star is an avid and enthusiastic supporter of causes such as breast cancer research and domestic violence, and Ford often accompanies her to events to raise money and awareness of social issues. In November 2007, the pair joined Kirk Douglas in Los Angeles to provide Thanksgiving meals for the homeless. But Ford's overwhelming passion is the environment. In 1991, he was introduced to Conservation International, one of the world's leading environmental research groups, and was deeply impressed with the intellectual capacity of its directors. Founded in 1987, Conservation International provides a fund for scientists in 30 countries to identify and overcome biodiversity threats. It focuses its efforts on tropical wilderness areas, marine areas, and major wetlands, and since its inception has donated over $100 million to conservation partners around the world.

Obesity has its own risks of cancer. Control weight and keep active Being overweight increases the risks of breast, uterus, colon, prostate, esophagus and stomach cancers. In addition to a good diet, exercise helps keep weight down, but even by itself lowers risk of prostate, breast, colon and uterine cancer. GRIEVING LOSS IN THE LGBT COMMUNITY
As some of our readers may know, on the 8th of December I lost Debbie, my partner of over 10 years to breast cancer, so I completely understand what Paul Monette, the author of the above quote is saying. We live in a mortal, frail, imperfect world and life is always a terminal condition. If we live long enough we will inevitably lose friends, family or loved ones. There is however such a loneness in grief that most can not ever understand till they have experienced it themselves. I find my family and friends all offer me kind words and sympathies, but know I know first hand from my own experiences of these past two weeks they can never know the pain I am feeling right now, because I know now that before Debs passing that I could never have completely understood what a loss like this means to a person.
Say it in the Smokies
To help women find the support they need, whether they've just been diagnosed, are in treatment or are a survivor of any type of cancer, the Blount Memorial Cancer Center organizes a weekend retreat to the mountains for women to find support from other women who truly understand a cancer diagnosis. The retreat's environment offers a time for camaraderie, validation and an opportunity for personal growth. The spirit among women at the retreat is one that's genuine and encouraging - there's no dwelling on the bad things. In its fourth year, the retreat - Celebrate Spring -- is a time to celebrate life. Women leave with a positive attitude, and they no longer feel the need to whisper the word cancer. They're given the support they need to stand up and say, "I have cancer. I am alive." Retreat attendees also participate in educational programming and group activities.
Arts Council enriches our cultural life in NH
Enriches a variety of social and health programs such as those that reach out to at-risk youth, women recovering from breast cancer and Alzheimer's patients. Helps conserve and educate the public about multicultural traditions, from contra-dance calling to African drumming. As councilors, we feel strongly that the proposed cuts to the Council on the Arts are not in the best interest of our state's economic recovery or its citizens. Therefore, while understanding that a reduction is necessary, we respectfully request that as many staff positions as possible be reinstated. We hope that a more equitable and manageable cut can be worked out so the good work this small state agency has accomplished over the past 44 years can be continued. The state's past financial investment in New Hampshire's cultural life has made a difference to the quality of our lives, educational programs in our schools, and our economic health, and we encourage the governor and the legislators to continue to support the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts at a sustainable level.
Cancer charity locks for help to head up service
Now, Breast Cancer Care, a charity that provides support for sufferers, is launching its HeadStrong campaign, which offers patients practical information and support for hair loss, in Peterborough.And the charity is looking for kind-hearted and willing volunteers, who may even be former cancer patients, to roll out the service in the city.The new initiative, which is designed to boost self-esteem and teach people the practical techniques and information needed to cope with hair loss, will be launched at city's Edith Cavell Hospital in Bretton in the spring.The service works by patients booking an appointment for a one-hour consultation where they will be given hair and scalp advice.They will also be shown how to tie headscarves and the alternatives to wearing a wig, including hair pieces, fringes and other headwear.Practical support manager for Breast Cancer Care Gill Swain-Coad said: “We already run this service in 19 centres across the UK, and people who have used it find it incredibly useful.“When a person is diagnosed with cancer, often the most devastating part of the news is that they could lose their hair, particularly with women.
Ride ’em cowboy
Cromwell, now a radio station account executive, hopes to collect contributions from people and organizations who want to support breast cancer awareness, public education, research and treatment by riding a bull as part of the Tough Enough to Wear Pink program.According to Cromwell, all the proceeds will be used for Breast Cancer Awareness and given to benefit organizations or to individuals and families of breast cancer victims for medical and other approved expenses not otherwise covered by insurance or other forms of financial assistance. .

In breast cancer, two randomized phase II studies have completed enrolment, one in combination with paclitaxel and another one with capecitabine. We could also see top line data from one of the studies this year.
